St John’s House Open Day 2016

On the 17th November Jamie and Lisa-Maria went to the Castlemeadow Care’s newest home unveiling; St John’s House care home in Norwich. Have a read of Lisa’s brilliant write up on her impression of the home and what she took away from the day;

“St John’s House is absolutely stunning. Upon arrival we were greeted at the gorgeous and traditional building via a red carpet and walked into a reception to rival most 5-star hotels. The large chandeliers and reflective stone walls an initial example of the luxurious furnishings throughout the home.

We stood with other invited guests, speaking briefly with the owner Dr Sanjay Kaushal, Director Sonya Kaushal and Sue Hill, who we secured to manage and commission St John’s House. Shortly afterwards a crowd gathered as the Mayor and Sheriff of Norwich cut the ribbon alongside celebrity chef Paul Rankin, and Paul gave a speech on the importance of good food, particularly in care homes, and how naturally sourced ingredients really do make all the difference. This was followed by a brief speech by the Sherriff on how his children had attended St John’s when it was still a school, and how pleased he was that the building was still serving the community.

Once the home was officially opened, we were taken on tours around the building in small groups. The home was absolutely stunning, and each room had its own theme and served a distinct purpose. Downstairs is residential, with a bridge room for games; a lounge with a grand piano; a hair salon; two restaurants; many other lounges and a shop for residents.

Upstairs is the dementia floor, and it’s set out to look like a village square with benches and a tree covered in fairy lights. Many of the rooms have shop fronts and there was a brilliant reminiscence room which made us both think of our grandparents. Upstairs also houses the cinema and another restaurant.

After our tour, we settled down to afternoon tea which was followed up by a final speech from Dr Kaushal on the ideas behind the design of the home. These ideas are central to St John’s House and to Castlemeadow Care as a whole – pushing boundaries of care; fun; quality of life; respect; and celebration of life. Dr Kaushal also went over the new initiative his company are starting up; for every new residential or nursing home they build, they will commit to building a school in Africa! The first of these is named St John’s, after the home, and was built in Sierra Leone.

St Johns staff

After his speech, Dr Kaushal handed out gifts and his thanks to prominent attendees and staff. On our exit, we managed to speak to Sue at length about the challenges she expects to face and her excitement to get her first residents into the home.

I’m really pleased I had the opportunity to take a look at St John’s House and wish the staff and managers all the best going forward, the home is a really impressive build and I hope it will be enjoyed and cherished for many, many years.”
